South Africa Innings

Munaf Patel bowled India to a narrow 1-run victory in the Second ODI at Johannesburg as South Africa got bowled out for 189 in 43 overs. The match went right till the wire despite South Africa sitting pretty thanks to a solid 77 from 98 balls (with 8 fours) from Skipper Graeme Smith.
India had an early breakthrough when Munaf Patel had the in-form Hashim Amla caught behind off the inside edge in the 2nd over. South Africa then settled down through a 56-run stand between Smith and Colin Ingram. It was Harbhajan Singh who provided the major breakthrough when Ingram (25) defended along the wrong line to get hit on the pad. After this, the pressure was sustained on the Proteas with the runs getting curbed down. AB de Villiers got a beauty from Nehra which nipped away just enough to take the outside edge to leave SA at 77 for 3. JP Duminy came in and helped Smith in a good partnership but the former looking to play a big shot holed out to long on off part-timer Rohit Sharma. India was back in the game with SA at 120 for 4.
In the 33rd over, India managed to break another potentially promising partnership and they started to get wickets in a hurry. South Africa was in the middle of the batting powerplay when Graeme Smith dragged an expansive drive off Munaf Patel onto his stumps. Miller (27) got out in the next over top edging a pull off Zaheer to short fine leg and in the 36th over, Botha was wrongly given out lbw off the same bowler. Botha and SA were hard done by as he only got a bottom edge with no impact on the pad at all. In the 39th over, Steyn ran himself out and SA were back in trouble at 177 for 8. Munaf Patel finished the match off taking the wickets of Morkel and Parnell with both the left handers paying the price for their uppish cut shots! Parnell could have been the hero but when SA needed just the two runs to win, he cut Munaf's short and wide delivery straight into the hands of Yuvraj at backward point! It was Munaf Patel who got the Man of the Match for taking 4 wickets.

India Innings

Lonwabo Tsotsobe claimed impressive figures of 10-0-22-4 as India folded to just 190 in 47.2 overs on what seems to be a batting pitch at Johannesburg. India after a slow start was kept under persistent pressure by the South African bowlers and a result the wickets kept on falling at regular intervals.

There were two decent partnership in the Indian innings but both were cut short when one of the batsmen looked to up the ante. First it was the 2nd wicket stand of 42 runs between Virat Kohli (22) and Sachin Tendulkar which was broken through the run out of the former. Tendulkar got out scoring 24 when he dragged a backfoot shot onto his stumps off Johan Botha. Even the off spinner managed to keep India under a check with figures of 10-0-35-1!

In the middle overs, Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni were allowed to put up a partnership as Smith decided to rest Morkel and Steyn. The two Indian batsmen put up 83 runs for the 5th wicket before Yuvraj was caught at mid off in the 37th over having scored 53 from 68 balls. India took the batting powerplay at 169 for 4 in the 42nd over but it proved to be a disaster with 4 wickets going down at the addition of just 14 runs! MS Dhoni was one of the batsmen to be dismissed in this period after a patient 38 from 61 balls.

Toss and Teams

India have won the toss and elected to bat first in the Second ODI at New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. Both the teams have gone in with unchanged sides. The pitch here at Johannesburg is a batting friendly one and there could be a high scoring game on offer. The team chasing will have the advantage especially when the weather can be unpredictable. For the Indian batsmen, the challenge would be to see off the new ball under slightly overcast conditions.
